TR300 soldering table-top robot

The mta TR300 is a table-top soldering robot platform. This robot is purpose-built and standardized for semi-automated applications that require point-to-point soldering.

The table-top platform is a cost-effective solution to automate existing hand-soldering processes without the cost of fully-automated systems. Automating the solder process has several advantages over hand soldering. It produces highly consist joints, improved quality, higher throughput and it requires less skill and training than hand soldering.

This table-top soldering robot platform is also ideal for applications where human dexterity is required to position the parts. Indeed, operators can load and unload the parts in offline fixtures to minimize machine downtime.

The main features of our TR300 platform include: sturdy aluminum frame, 4-axis soldering robot, 300x300mm working area, 0.02mm repeatability, industrial PC controller with Windows 10 operating system, intuitive menu-driven mta MotionEditor software and air preparation & selectable 110/220VAC power connections.

Mechanical features

As the TR300 is a purpose-built solution, it can support any of mta’s soldering heads without compromise. The ball-screw axis and motors provide fast repeatable motion.  Likewise, they are strong enough to support our heads that include our anti-jam wire feeder system and solder wire spool.  There is no need to push solder wire through lengthy and problematic feed tubes. Therefore, the solder process is more accurate and reliable wire feed than feeding the wire long distances. Similarly, we pre-plumbed a large fume extraction hose with the nozzle located directly above the solder joint. Furthermore, light curtains and safety guarding are standard features. Lastly, the TR300 platform includes metal sides and door to protect operators with the laser soldering head.

5 reasons to choose the mta TR300 table-top robot

  1. The TR300 is the ideal platform for companies looking to automate current hand soldering processes.
  2. Your process is difficult to fully automate (e.g. you need human dexterity to load the parts.).
  3. Volume or product life do not justify fully automated production.
  4. The remaining processes are also off-line.
  5. The parts fit inside a 300x300mm work area.

  • Iron head for soldering robots

    Classic soldering iron

mta’s classic iron head for soldering robots is our most popular soldering technology. Probably because most customers are upgrading from hand soldering with the iron.

We can integrate the classic iron head for soldering robots on any of our standard soldering platforms including: MRC500, TR300, OEM and station.

The main features of our classic iron head for soldering robots include:

    • Multiple adjustments allowing easy configuration for specific applications
    • Robust structure guaranteeing that tip and wire feeder do not get misaligned accidentally
    • Soldering tips have a long life span and users can change them quickly and easily
    • Extensive tip selection to suit a wide variety of applications
    • Jam-free wire feeder mounted directly on the head provides tight process control
    • Lead free compatible

7 reasons to choose the mta classic soldering iron

    1. The soldering tip is separate from the heating element, so users do not need to change the heating element as frequently as the tip. This reduces consumable cost.
    2. A pneumatically-dampened spring lowers the tip to allow compliance between the tip and part. This provides good thermal transfer while protecting the parts and tip. Also, the robot does not use the z-axis to move the iron tip.
    3. There are no stamped sheet metal or die-cast parts. We machined the robust head structure from solid material to provide a rigid platform for the iron and wire feeder.
    4. The clamping system provides easy adjustment and precise alignment. Once tightened, the position will not change until loosened – there is no risk of accidental misalignment as a result of heavy use or while changing tips.
    5. We mounted our precise jam-free wire feeder directly on the head – at the solder joint. This provides tight process control of the wire feed. Solder wire does not kink or get jammed since there is no long feed tube. Once the correct amount is fed, the wire feeder pulls the wire out of the solder pool to prevent solder spatter.
    6. We integrated the fume extraction nozzle into the head itself. Therefore, it is mounted directly above the solder joint to safely remove fumes.
    7. In addition to the iron, wire feeder and fume extraction nozzle, the head can support several optional devices such as: cameras, flux dispensers, dual feeders, dual irons and the list goes on.

  • Induction head for soldering robots

    Induction head

mta’s induction head is appropriate for robots soldering joints that have a high thermal mass and require more heat to solder. Other heating methods must allow time for the heat to migrate from outside-in; whereas, the induction system is able to create heat within the part to greatly reduce process time.

We can integrate the induction soldering head on any of our standard soldering platforms including: MRC500, TR300, OEM, and station.

The main features of our induction head include:

    • Quickly heats parts with high thermal mass
    • We can shape the coil to meet specific application requirements
    • Solid-state control
    • Non-contact soldering
    • The jam-free wire feeder mounted directly on the head provides tight process control
    • Suitable for brazing (hard alloy)
    • Non-conductive parts of the components to be soldered are not heated by the induction
    • Lead-free compatible

8 reasons to choose the mta induction soldering head

    1. Inductive soldering quickly heats high-mass parts. Therefore, it is an excellent technology for heavy/multi-layer boards, large cable terminals, non-electronic parts, and many others.
    2. Inductive fields heats without damaging the product. Inductive fields penetrate the material to create heat form inside the board. This uniform heating method does not burn the outer surface. By contrast, technologies that push heat from the outside-inward, can damage the outer surface before the joint reaches reflow temperature.
    7. In addition to the inductor, wire feeder, and fume extraction nozzle, the head can support several optional devices such as: cameras, flux dispensers, dual feeders, dual irons and the list goes on.
    8. Very low consumables – no iron tips or cleaning sponges.

  • Microflame head for soldering robots

    Microflame head

mta’s microflame soldering head is typically selected for robots in two extreme applications. At one extreme, it solders high-mass joints similar to the induction system. At the other extreme, it solders relatively small joints that require a very quick soldering process.

We can integrate the microflame head for soldering robots on any of our standard soldering platforms including: MRC500, TR300 OEM and station.

The main features of our microflame head include:

    • Patented pivoting flame tip
    • Electrolysis providing gas from distilled water
    • Non-contact soldering process
    • Jam-free wire feeder mounted directly on the head provides tight process control
    • Flame detection and automatic lighting are available as options
    • Compatible with RoHS (lead-free) solder

8 reasons to choose the mta microflame soldering head

    1. The patented pivoting flame tip rotates very quickly to precisely control heat exposure.
    2. The flame burns around 3000° C, but it is extremely small. It quickly focuses intense heat in small isolated areas to avoid damaging nearby components or plastic housings. In many cases, we use it to solder joints that other soldering technologies would damage. For example, the microflame can solder small diameter wire terminals before the wire insulation has a chance to melt.
    7. In addition to the microflame, wire feeder and fume extraction nozzle, the head can support several optional devices such as: cameras, flux dispensers, dual feeders, dual irons and the list goes on.
    8. Electrolysis provides gas from distilled water. Consequently, there are very low consumables – no iron tips or cleaning sponges.

  • Laser head for soldering robots

    MLH45 laser head

mta’s MLH45 laser head is primarily used for soldering robots on joints that are too small for the iron – smaller than 1mm. For the smallest applications, we combine the laser heat source with optical realignment and solder paste jet dispenser. This guarantees mastery of the total process especially in cases where solder wire size is too large to achieve optimal results.

We also use the MLH45 laser head for soldering robots when the part requires a non-contact heat source, or the joints are in tight places that physical heating units cannot reach.

We can integrate the induction soldering iron on two of our standard soldering platforms: laser MRC500 robotic cell and TR300 table-top robot.
N.B. We add metal sides and a mechanical door to the TR300 table-top robot to protect operators from the laser.

The main features of our MLH45 laser head include:

    • The ability to solder very small joints
    • Easy teaching with integrated monitoring and laser pointer
    • Diode laser with optical fiber
    • Non-contact soldering
    • Jam-free wire feeder mounted directly on the head provides tight process control
    • Compatible with RoHS (lead-free) solder

7 reasons to choose the mta MLH45 laser soldering head

    1. We can combine the laser with solder paste jetting system to solder very small joints.
    2. Optional fiducial recognition is able to realign the paste jetting system and laser.
    3. The laser fires straight down, so it is able to reach joints inaccessible by iron, induction and microflame.
    4. There are no stamped sheet metal or die-cast parts. We machined the robust head structure from solid material to provide a rigid platform for the iron and wire feeder.
    5. The clamping system provides easy adjustment and precise alignment. Once tightened, the position will not change until loosened – there is no risk of accidental misalignment as a result of heavy use or while changing tips.
    6. We mounted our precise jam-free solder wire feeder directly on the head – at the solder joint. This provides tight process control of the wire feed. Solder wire does not kink or get jammed since there is no long feed tube. Once the correct amount is fed, the wire feeder pulls the wire out of the solder pool to prevent solder spatter.
    7. Optionally, the solder paste jet, is offset on the same head, so one robot provides both functions – no need for a second robot to apply solder to the parts.
